Kim and I had been fucking around heavy ever since I got out. The first couple of weeks I was home, I damn near fucked all of Harlem and half the Bronx. I had to catch up on the years that I was locked down. I hated to do Kim the way I was doing her because she was a good girl and maybe one day in the future, Iâd regret not appreciating her. But for now, I didnât have any regrets. Kim was too nice. Too sweet. Too dependent. Too inexperienced. Too weak. I could go on for days. She wasnât a challenge. She wasnât wild and exotic. I knew what I was looking for, and when I found herâI was out.
Kim gave me two thousand dollars that she had saved from her tax return to get on my feet. I was supposed to buy some clothes to go on job interviews and start a small bank account. Instead, I ran through the money in one day. I went to Jimmy Jazz on 125th Street and bought Rocawear jeans, Lacoste shirts, white tees, fitted hats, and a few pairs of kicks. That day, while she was at work, I hooked up with a man from my past. I was walking past the Apollo Theater when I noticed what appeared to be Rick, sitting in the driverâs seat of a blue Cadillac Escalade.
âRick?â I asked as I approached. He had a few niggas standing around, kicking it.
âWho you be?â he sarcastically replied as he looked me up and down. Immediately, my eyes hooded over and I bit my bottom lip.
âDonât front like you tough, you bitch-ass, snitch-ass nigga!â I yelled.
âCagney?â Rick said as his eyes widened. âYou home, nigga?â
He jumped out of his truck and came around to the street where I was standing.
âThis my man I was telling yâall about. Remember, I told yâall that my man held me down and took the weight,â he said. Both dudes looked at him and didnât have a clue what he was talking about.
Ignoring this silly nigga, I looked at his makeup. He was wearing an iced-out Jacob watch, new kicks, sharp gear, and he had a slight bulge in his pocket. He saw me scoping him out.
âYou aâight? You need anything?â
I was about to tell him to run his pockets but decided to think long term.
âCâmere, let me rap to you for a second,â I said and put my arm tightly around his neck. âPardon, me,â I said to his two flunkies.
As we walked, I could tell Rick felt uneasy.
âYou know Black got jammed up last year. Heâs doing a one to three,â he stuttered.
âI didnât ask about Black.â
âTrue, true.â
âYou seem like youâre doing aâight for yourself.â
âI canât complain.â
âYou shouldnât. When I got sent up north, you was walkinâ âround in borrowed jeans and holes in your sneakers.â
I could tell Rick felt even more uneasy and didnât know where the conversation was heading.
âSo what do you want?â
âI want in.â
âIn where?â
âI want in whatever youâre into.
